Bahá'í Web Site No. 3 in Top 10 There is a nice piece of publicity and recognition for the Bahá'í Faith in Internet Monthly. The November 1999 issue carries a feature (with colour pictures of the home pages) of what it calls the Top 10 sites on the World Wide Web in each of a number of categories. The religion category includes the Bahá'í World site as number three of its Top 10 - Religion Websites. Kudos to Tony Fleming, who drew the site to the editor's attention. A Book on the Arts for the next Millennium The Bahá'í Association for the Arts – producers of Arts Dialogue magazine for the last decade – is working on a book that looks at the diverse ways Bahá'ís are exploring the arts, and also at art, not necessarily by Bahá'ís, that has been inspired by the Bahá'í teachings. Joint Meeting of Religious Studies SIS and Irfan Colloquium A joint meeting of the Association for Bahá'í Studies (ESE) Religious Studies Special Interest Group and the Irfan Colloquium will be held at the London School of Economics, London, 14-16 July 2000. It will be followed by a seminar on the revelation of Bahá'u'lláh during the Akka period. Presentations of papers on mysticism and the Bahá'í Faith, principles of Bahá'í theology, and the Writings of Bahá'u'lláh during the later Akka period are welcome. The Wilmette Institute The Wilmette Institute would like to invite potential students of the Spiritual Foundations for a Global Civilization programme to begin applying for the 2000 session. Spiritual Foundations is a four-year programme of systematic study of the Bahá'í Faith. Annually it involves two weeks of intensive classes and seminars in Wilmette and four and a half months of reading and learning projects at home. Each year covers a different aspect of the Bahá'í Faith; in 2000 the program will stress world religions, philosophical issues, and Bahá'í theology. Bahá'í history and scripture are partially covered each year; in 2000 the Báb, the Bábí community, and the life of Bahá'u'lláh to 1863 will be the focus of the historical section, and Selections from the Writings of the Báb, the Kitáb-i-íqán, and Some Answered Questions will be the focus of the scriptural study. In addition, there will be workshops on public speaking and seminars on how to teach the Bahá'í Faith successfully, led by the programme's graduates. Here are the dates of the program:
Home study begins 1 May 2000; Summer program begins Saturday 29 July 2000, 2 p.m. (please arrive late Friday or Saturday morning); Summer program ends Saturday 12 August 2000, 12 noon (please plan to leave no sooner than 2 p.m.); Home study resumes 15 August 2000; Home study ends 30 September 2000 (Spiritual Foundations students will have until 1 May 2001 to take as many distance-learning courses as they please for free, and to complete projects involving teaching the Bahá'í Faith and deepening).
For $700 of annual tuition students get all this, plus free access to the Wilmette Institute's distance-learning courses. The House of Worship is within walking distance of Kendall College (where the program is held) and students go to the Temple often to pray and serve as guides. Kendall's dormitory costs about $300 for two weeks and gourmet meals at Kendall's cafeteria (which is run by their cooking school!) cost about $5 each. Some financial aid is available. The programme is open to anyone with a high school degree or equivalent. Students range in age from 17 to 75 and make lifetime friends with other students.

Conflict Resolution at Landegg Academy res core module courses now scheduled for 22 May to 9 June 2000. All who wish to participate in this recently added module, either as a MA student or for a Professional Certificate in Conflict Resolution, are invited to register for the course. The four courses in the module are given below and in the Course Calendar. This is the first time that Landegg has offered the Professional Certificate in Conflict Resolution. Individuals interested and involved in either Micro-conflicts (interpersonal, marital and familial, and institutional) or Macro-conflicts (inter-group, international, and political) could benefit from this Professional Certificate module. Thus, lawyers, teachers, social workers, psychologists, governmental and non-governmental executives and graduates of other disciplines who wish to have expertise in Conflict Resolution are invited to register.

Conference on the Bábí and Bahá'í Religions The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Chair of Bahá'í Studies and Landegg Academy of Switzerland announces the first international conference on 'The Bábí and Bahá'í Religions in the Context of Modern Religious Movements' at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel 24-27 December 2000. CALL FOR PAPERS Scope of Subjects The Bábí and the Bahá'í religions reflect unique developments in the religious life of 19th Century Shiite Islam in General, and of írán in particular. Indeed, the mid-19th Century appearance of the Báb in írán coincided with highly significant developments in the worlds of Judaism, Christianity and Sunni Islam. The aim of this Conference is to examine the development of the Bábí and Bahá'í religions within the broader context of developments that took place in the other major monotheistic religions - beginning in the 19th Century and extending to the present day.

Lecturing in Siberia The Chair of History and International Relations at the faculty of History of Irkutsk State University would welcome a lecturer (scholar), not necessarily a historian, but with some advanced degree. The head of the department is interested in comparative religious studies, international relations, social and economic development, and the work of the United Nations. They have a course on the History of religions, and Bahá'í Faith could be part of that or a separate special course (which may be short depending on the themes). This lecturer would also be expected to lecturer on other religions. The period of time would be for 3-4 months. The faculty unfortunately cannot provide the accommodation or pay much.
