Association of Baha'i Women

from Louise Hughes

Serving as a board member on the Association of Bahá’í Women (Scotland)

When I first received the letter asking if I would like to serve on the executive committee for Scotland's Association of Bahá’í Women, I was both surprised and honoured. From what limited information I had read on the ABW I had assumed (wrongly as it happens) that it was very highbrow and not particularly relevant at community level! Oh how wrong I was. Having been on the committee now for just over a year I am delighted to say it is not at all complicated, though getting us all together in the same place, at the same time sometimes is! And what I am most pleasantly surprised by is just how highly worthwhile and effective it is in the local community. As the principal two remits of the ABW are to raise both the potential of women and the profile of the Bahá’í teachings within the wider community with regards to women's issues, both can be achieved with the help of local ABW groups at the same time as bringing together a diverse group of women who quite frankly just enjoy each other's company. The ABW runs and supports various programmes and weekends aimed at women as well as organising workshops and sessions at most major Bahá’í gatherings. I don't suppose too many of you are aware, because until a year ago I wasn't, but if you're female and a Bahá’í residing the in the UK then you're already a member of the ABW UK, so go on, get empowered, get organising your own local group and let's all reach our potential together.

We are delighted that Judy Finlay and Pat McNicol from Skye have been appointed to serve on the ABW board. A very warm welcome is extended to both and I am sure you will hear from them through our page here in the Scottish Bahá’í. We are always interested in hearing from you so please contact Lizbeth our Secretary (e-mail & phone details on back page) or any member with news, or for assistance, advice, etc.

Has your community studied the Compilation on 'Women'? Do you have a local branch of ABW? Would you like to know how to set one up? You know who we are so lets get in contact.
For your information the present board members are: Judy Finlay (Skye), Shelagh Gudmundsson (Dunfermline), Mandy Hepburn (West Kilbride), Louise Hughes (Dura Den), Pat McNicol (Skye), Rosemary Sheppard (Galasheils), Zoe Sier (Glasgow), Lizbeth Thomson (West Kilbride).
With Love from your ABW
