Huqúq’ulláh – The Right of God
Dear Friends,
It is with love and humility that I would like to share with you some references and
thoughts on that most mighty Law of Bahá’u’lláh, Huqúqu'lláh.
The Law of Huqúqu’lláh was first revealed by the Blessed Báb in the Bayán. It was then
legislated by the Bahá’u’lláh in the Most Holy Book, The Kitáb-i-Aqdas, often referred
to as the book of Laws. In one of His Tablets, Bahá’u’lláh refers to the law of
Huqúqu’lláh as ranking in importance immediately after the two great obligations of:
recognition of God and steadfastness in His Cause.
Say: O people, the first duty is to recognise the one true God – magnified be His
glory – The second is to show forth constancy in His Cause and after these, one's
duty is to purify one's riches and earthly possessions according to that which is
prescribed by God. [1]
He further states:
Indeed there lie concealed in this command, mysteries and benefits which are
beyond the comprehension of anyone save God, the All- Knowing the All-
Informed. [2]
It is the source of grace, abundance, and of all good. It is a bounty which shall
remain with every soul in every world of the worlds of God, the All- possessing
the All Bountiful. [3]
The Law of Huqúqu’lláh is a spiritual obligation which is unlike any other Law revealed
in the past. On the one hand it is obligatory and on the other it is only if offered 'in a spirit
of joy and radiance, such an act is acceptable, and not otherwise.' [4]
The payment of Huqúqu’lláh is calculated from one’s possessions; but what if one
is unable to pay. Bahá’u’lláh has made reference to this in various places.
Those who are unable to pay will be invested with the ornament of His
forgiveness. [5]
Dear friends, some months ago I was contacted by a member of The Board of Trustees
of Huqúqu’lláh and, along with Rachel Burnett, have been appointed as one of the
representatives for Huqúqu’lláh for Scotland. Our role will be very much one of service
to the community in the form of a resource to be called upon by the friends in all parts of
Scotland if they would like further information on this mighty Law of Huqúqu’lláh. We
would also be happy to make home-visits to anyone who would like one, so that we can
study this Law together.
